Ikigai comes in many shapes and sizes. Even when you are looking for something different, ikigai can find you. Here is a story on how Jennifer found her purpose while trying to find herself, so far away from home.
Shy girl in Oklahoma
Jennifer had always felt like an outsider in her small town in Oklahoma. Growing up, she struggled to make friends and feel comfortable in social situations. She attended church on Sundays with her family and participated in Bible study and other youth group activities. But even there, she found it difficult to connect with others.
As she grew older, Jennifer’s shyness only seemed to get worse. She was too afraid to speak up in class and found it difficult to make small talk with people she didn’t know. Her introverted personality made it hard for her to feel like she belonged anywhere.
Despite her struggles, Jennifer continued to try to make friends. She attended school and interacted with neighbors in the tight-knit community, but her awkwardness only made it hard. Everyone throughout the town knew her as the shy, introverted girl who didn’t quite fit in.
As the years went by, Jennifer began to feel more and more isolated. She spent most of her time alone, reading books and dreaming of a life where she felt more confident and self-assured. Jennifer longed to escape her small town and find a place where she could be herself and connect with others.
Moving on to find oneself
One day, Jennifer’s world was turned upside down when her father passed away suddenly. The loss hit her hard, and she struggled to cope with her grief. Her mother, consumed by her own grief, was unable to provide the support Jennifer needed.
Feeling more alone than ever, Jennifer began to consider the idea of leaving her small town and starting over somewhere new. She knew it wouldn’t be easy, but she felt like it was the only way to find a place where she could truly belong.
Always having been fascinated by Japanese culture, Jennifer looked to the far east. She hoped that Tokyo, one of the biggest cities in the world would provide her with the anonymity she needed to feel more comfortable in her own skin. So with a heavy heart, Jennifer began to make plans to leave the small town behind and set out on a new journey.
Jennifer had been living in Tokyo for a few months now and was enjoying her new life in the city. She found the uniqueness that the foreign culture provided comforting and enjoyed exploring all the different neighborhoods and districts. The fast-paced life of Tokyo kept her occupied, and she loved immersing herself in the vibrant arts and culture scene.
One day, while exploring a new neighborhood, Jennifer stumbled upon a small café. Something about the cozy atmosphere drew her in, and she decided to sit down for a cup of coffee. As she sat there sipping her coffee, she looked out the window and noticed a bulletin board advertising church activities in English. Feeling curious, Jennifer decided to take a flyer from the church and attend one of the activities.
Finding friends unexpectedly
Despite feeling a bit hesitant at first, but hoping to find some sense of familiarity or a piece of home in a foreign land, she decided to attend one of the church’s services. Upon entering the church, Jennifer was reminded of the comfort that her faith had brought her during her childhood. To her surprise, she was welcomed by friendly and supportive members, many of whom were also ex-pats themselves.
As she got to know them a little, she enjoyed learning about their amazing stories and backgrounds living in Tokyo. They loved to talk and Jennifer loved to listen.
As time went on, through the church activities, Jennifer slowly began to brake through her hard shell. She actually made friends and explored the city with them.
She found that the city was much more welcoming and friendly than she had initially thought, and she started to feel more comfortable talking to others. She realized that she had found a new community in a city with over a hundred and twenty-five million people and oddly felt more connected to the world around her.
Finding ikigai unexpectedly
Jennifer began attending church activities regularly and even started volunteering her time to help with various events and community outreach programs. She enjoyed being part of the church’s community and felt like she belonged there.
Her passion for volunteering grew, and she even started her own weekly Bible study group, which quickly gained popularity among other members. She felt grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and was determined to continue doing so.
As she became more involved, Jennifer was asked to join the church’s leadership team. She was thrilled at the opportunity and eagerly accepted. Being part of the leadership team gave her even more responsibility, and she was trusted with overseeing various projects and initiatives.
She found herself becoming a trusted advisor to many of the church’s members. Her confidence grew with each new challenge.
Jennifer’s newfound confidence began to spill over into other areas of her life. She found herself making friends more easily and no longer felt afraid to speak up in social situations.
Even though she still missed her family back in Oklahoma and occasionally felt homesick, the church had become a second home to her. Jennifer finally found the sense of belonging that she had been searching for her whole life and knew that she had found her place in the world, her ikigai.
